SPECIAL CONFERENCE EDITION
DECEMBER 2017

Director Update

Dan Fazio, Director

Last month, during the Thanksgiving break, wafla Olympia headquarters moved to a bigger office space in our building. If you are in Olympia, please stop by and check it out. It's really nice.

And December is dedicated to the remaining details for the wafla January conferences - both the H-2A Workforce Summits (OR & WA) and the Labor Conference. If you haven't registered, please register now. See spotlight story below.

A key innovation for 2018 is the new H-2A portal. The portal is a one-stop shop where H-2A program member participants will go to access timelines, guidance, forms, resources, and more to make the H-2A program run smooth. In order to access it, all you need to do is to sign in to our website. If your email address is linked to a membership, we will need to add it to a special group to gain access to the portal. Please make sure the appropriate contacts from your company will have access now. Learn more.

Last, as we start a new year if you are utilizing the guest worker program, a friendly reminder that you must start your application process with wafla and request housing inspections from the WA State Department of Health 90 days prior to your date of need (DON). That means if you have a DON for workers in March or April, you should be getting your 2018 updated Employer Questionnaire's to us now! If your DON is late February, contact us immediately! For growers not utilizing the guest worker program and interested in doing so in the new year, please request a consult.

As always, we thank you for being a wafla member.

Sincerely,

Dan Fazio, Executive Director

HRAnswers - Great Question!

Q.  Is there a limit on the number of employees, i.e., less than 50 in which employers are exempt from offering sick pay required by the new Washington state paid sick leave law established by I-1433 that takes effect January 1, 2018?

Wafla members can submit unlimited HR questions through HRAnswers located under the members only tab at our website.

Spotlight on wafla Conferences

We put together industry-specific conferences just for you! Here is why you and your colleagues should attend this January 17 and 18 at the Wenatchee Convention Center!

H-2A Workforce Summits - January 17

The H-2A Workforce Summit focuses on how seasonal employers can best utilize the federal H-2A program to attract a legal and stable workforce. It's imperative that current member program participants attend, as well as like-minded growers interested in utilizing the federal guest worker program. Highlights include:
  • Labor unrest is a good chunk of the agenda from right to strike, prevention, and what is blacklisting and why it is important you know;
  • Immigration reform update;
  • A proven grading system for workers that ensures accountability; and much more.

Wafla Annual Meeting/Labor Conference - January 18
Staying the Course
Three general sessions and twelve breakouts provided by regulators, attorneys, accountants and other leading voices in labor and employment matters. Highlights include:
  • Labor unrest response plan due to the uptick in organized worker strikes, prevention, and legal background;
  • Discussion about the current assault on ag wages occurring due to the Supreme Court's decision on non-productive time for piece rate workers as well as the latest class action which could end the ag overtime exemption in Washington state; and
  • Twelve breakouts covering: the gamut of leave laws existing and new; conducting HR investigations; labor shortage strategies and much more!

See you in Wenatchee this January!
