Director Update

Dan Fazio, Director

Harvest is winding down, workers are headed home, we are planning our H-2A Workforce Summits, Labor Conference, and Winter Ag Academy, and everyone is gearing up for the holidays!

Flying people home was a logistics challenge. Our logistics service negotiated incredible fares for airlines and charter buses, but farmers were understandably hesitant to confirm the final day of harvest two weeks out. We found a more flexible solution of busing people to Tijuana and flying from Tijuana. This enabled us to track that workers left the country while avoiding the most dangerous and time-consuming part of the trip home.

We attended the government H-2 conference in San Diego, where Homeland Security staff admitted that the government system for tracking when workers leave the U.S. is broken, and we met separately with them to propose a fix. It was an excellent conference.

Please check out the agendas for our Labor Conference/Annual Meeting on January 18 in Wenatchee, where the principal topic is going to be compliance with new wage and benefit regulations, and the H-2A Workforce Summits in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. At both conferences, we'll discuss recent labor unrest and present a checklist for farmers to respond. More under the learn and grow section below.

Last, we are gearing up for a busy year and staffing up to serve you. Our Lacey office is moving - next door - to a larger office that can accommodate future expansion, as we continue to grow to serve members. We will start moving on Wednesday, November 22, and finish by Monday, November 27, to minimize the disruption to members.

We here at wafla wish you and your family a happy and bountiful Thanksgiving Day! This is a day to remember everything in our lives small and large, and give thanks.

As always, we thank you for being a wafla member.

 Sincerely,

Dan Fazio, Executive Director
