JULY 2017

Director Update

Dan Fazio, Director

In June we worked with federal regulators and legislators to tweak our broken immigration system. A big THANK YOU to Rep. Dan Newhouse, who is using the agriculture appropriations process for FY 2018 to make the H-2A legal worker program more accessible. If you live in his district – or even if you don’t – check out his home page, subscribe to his newsletter, or attend one of his town hall meetings in August to say thank you!

Our project for July is ENCANTO, a mid-summer sunset concert in the Columbia Basin hub of Othello. ENCANTO is an enchanting, unique, musical production of dancers, orchestral performers, and solo entertainers, with proceeds helping to fund the Iñiguez Family Endowed Scholarships for children of farm workers. We have received sponsorship help from Walmart, Northwest Farm Credit Services, and many others, and you should definitely consider buying tickets for your workers – they are $25 or less, and children under 17 get in free if accompanied by an adult. It is important for farmers to celebrate workers with programs like this. Tickets are on sale now for what promises to be an incredible evening. See below.

Last, June was another busy month for H-2A, and things proceeded smoothly, except for a new wrinkle introduced by the Department of Labor (DOL) in some contracts. If you use the H-2A program, please take a look at a letter I sent explaining the DOL changes for multi-employer contracts. My favorite H-2A moment from the last month was another wafla first – chartered air travel. The chartered planes allowed us to land at SEA TAC at 6:00 a.m., be first in line to clear customs, and have workers accounted for in charter buses and out to farms by noon, a big improvement compared midnight arrivals after 30 hour bus rides! If you did not receive this letter, please contact your account executive.

As always, thanks for being a member.

 Sincerely,

Dan Fazio, Executive Director

Q. What is the status of the paid sick leave bill? Has the court challenge been settled yet? Will you be sending out information to aid farms in implementing the new rule?

Spotlight - Encanto Sunset Concert
Please help us make a splash in Othello this Summer!

Wafla is excited to present a first of its kind summer community event to honor wafla founder Jon Warling and celebrate the agricultural workforce!

Wafla is taking this opportunity to present this community concert to honor the people who work hard and share a love of agriculture. We applaud Jon, a longtime employer of thousands of farm laborers, principal founder of wafla, and generous supporter of ag and his community. In addition, we dedicate this special concert to celebrate farmworkers. Through a strong work ethic and determination to achieve a better life, farmworkers provide an effective labor force that powers the ag industry.

There will be booths and an amazing Encanto Sunset Concert featuring Jose Iñiguez, Ballard Civic Orchestra, Bailadores de Bronce, and Mariachi Huenachi directed by Fernando Luna. Proceeds go to scholarships for children of farmworkers. Read Columbia Basin Herald article (also listed below).
